Exceptional Waste Management: At Surreal, at least 95% of our salon materials are diverted from landfill. Almost everything is repurposed or upcycled. From hair clippings and foils to chemicals and plastics, we find innovative solutions to give these materials a new life. Excess chemicals are used to make roads, while hair is recycled into hair booms to soak up oil spills. All metals, such as foils and colour tubes, are sold as scrap metal to help fund food rescue charities, including KiwiHarvest.
Positive Impact Certificate: Each year, we receive an Impact Certificate from Sustainable Salons. This certificate quantifies our environmental contributions, highlighting how much waste we’ve diverted from landfill and the resources we’ve saved. It’s a testament to our dedication—one you can proudly share with your friends, family, and clients.
Supporting Communities: By partnering with Sustainable Salons, we extend our impact beyond environmental stewardship to social responsibility. Proceeds from our recycling efforts are donated to OzHarvest and KiwiHarvest, providing meals for those in need. Just £1 from our recycling translates into two hearty meals for someone in need.
Sustainability Fee: Surreal’s ethos includes recycling metals, plastics, paper, chemicals, and hair through Sustainable Salons. To support these efforts, a £3 fee is added to your appointment, directly funding recycling, research, and community support initiatives, including food charities for Kiwi kids.

All hair collected from the salon floor & stuffed into stockings called hair booms that are used to clean up oil spills in our oceans and waterways. All donated ponytails 20cm or longer are distributed to charitable organisations to create wigs for those suffering from cancer or alopecia.
All plastics are collected, cleaned & upcycled into new products including hair combs, dog leashes, furniture, plant pots, sunglasses, coasters
All aluminium foil, cans, colour tubes, cardboard & paper are made into refoil for salons to purchase or sold for recycling. All proceeds are donated to OzHarvest & KiwiHarvest to provide meals for hungry people.
Chemicals are collected & sent to chemical recycling plants where they are neutralised & turned into recycled water for use in construction sites or road works.
